Rhode Island Historical Society Awards History Maker John Chan
Woonsocket Restaurateur Receives Award for Cultural Contributions to Rhode Island
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Rhode Island Historical Society awarded local restauranter John Chan with its 2022 History Maker Award on Thursday, November 10 at their 201st Annual Meeting.
John Chan has used his restaurant, believed to be the location of the longest operating Chinese restaurant in the state, as a landmark entertainment venue as well. Chan’s Eggrolls and Jazz has brought remarkable acts to Rhode Island such as Dizzy Gillespe, Miles Davis, Duke Robillard, among other national and world renowned artists. Chan’s focus on booking top-tier talent has enriched Rhode Island’s arts and cultural scene for over 45 years, and cemented Chan’s as not only a lauded restaurant but a nationally known performance space.
Established in 1999, the Rhode Island Historical Society’s History Maker Award is presented to individuals who have made a significant impact on our state’s history through lives of service, use of talents and abilities to improve the public good, and devotion to the people of Rhode Island.
