Dear Neighbors and Friends
Every night when I get home and turn on the news, I see pollsters and pundits on TV talking about politics—who’s up or down, what the latest polling numbers say, and what this party or that party needs to do to win. I’ve got to tell you; it can be infuriating.
Look, the challenges facing all our families right now are huge. Prices are up because billionaire corporations are jacking up the cost of everything and using inflation and as an excuse. Big Oil companies are gouging us at the pump and drug companies and insurance agencies are ripping us off and charging obscene prices for drugs like insulin. Corporate profits are at record highs but working people haven’t seen a real pay raise in 40 years.
Enough is enough. Solving these problems means putting people over politics to lower costs for you and your family, support safer communities, and create better jobs.
That’s exactly what my Democratic colleagues and I have done and will continue to do. We have a proven track record of putting people over politics to make real changes that impact all our families for the better:
Lower Costs
Capping insulin at $35/ month for seniors starting this upcoming January.
Passing the Child Tax Credit, which was the largest ever tax cut for working families in history.
Going toe-to-toe with the drug companies, fighting to bring down the costs of prescriptions by letting Medicare negotiate on your behalf to fight for lower drug prices.
Taking on Big Oil and releasing strategic reserves to lower costs. Gas prices are dropping again, down $1.26 since the summer.
Passing the Access to Baby Formula Act and Ocean Shipping Reform Act to bring down prices.
Safer Communities
Fighting to get guns off streets and out of the hands of dangerous individuals.
Helping communities hire, train, and dispatch mental health experts to respond to people who are experiencing a mental health crisis.
Breaking cycles of violence and preventing crime before it starts by providing workforce training and job opportunities for at-risk young people.
Reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act, which will make vital new investments in prevention, improve services for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, and sexual assault, and works to better protect Native American women.
Better Jobs
Rebuilding America, fixing our roads, bridges, tunnels, airports, water and sewer systems, and more.
Reigniting American manufacturing and ending the supply chain shortages that are driving up costs. Nearly every week for the last few months, major companies have announced huge investments in communities across the country. Made in America is back for good.
Securing American energy independence that will ensure that we can outcompete any nation in the world, now and for decades to come.
The contrast is clear.
While Republicans are beholden to special interests, Democrats have taken them on. We will continue our laser-focused fight to lower the cost of living. And I will continue to put people over politics for lower costs, safer communities, and better jobs.
Sincerely,
Jim Mc Govern
