Confession From An Ergonomics Nerd
By Joe D’Eramo
I’m a nerd.
Not just any nerd.
An ergonomics nerd.
This discovery came during a call with Jennifer Graham and Steven Wilson in preparation for the Straight Talk on Office Ergonomics webinar on September 22 at 9am.

This realization came after many years of trying to make my 6’6” inch frame in a traditional office setting. It started with trying a stability ball as a seat. As I found out, confirmed by experts like Jen, that this is not a sustainable office chair. It’s just too difficult to do all day.
Then I decided to raise my laptop so I could look the screen in the eye.
That’s worked to a certain degree. Until my knee started to hurt.
That’s not an unusual ache. It’s something I experience after long car rides. Yet it was during the call with Jen and Steven I realized why:
My seat is not high enough for someone of my height.
You might be thinking why not get a standing desk. Jen was quick to point out that might lead someone of my size to be looking down at the screen again—the problem I thought I had solved with my current desk set up.
The point of all this is that the settings for your workstation are about as individual as your fingerprint. Everybody is different. And with all the time we spend in the office—at home or work—it’s important to get that right.
Attending Straight Talk on Office Ergonomics is a great way to get started. Jen is a certified ergonomics consultant. Steven knows office furniture. After a brief presentation, attendees can ask questions and get some answers. If my conversation with these two is any indication, probably some startling ones.
