Newport, RI – Continuing its commitment to ongoing year-round programming, Newport Classical presents its first Community Concert of the 2022-2023 season at Miantonomi Memorial Park (120 Hillside Ave.) on Sunday, September 18, 2022, at 2:30pm. The New York Brass Arts Trio –– Joe Burgstaller, trumpet; David Jolley, french horn; and Haim Avitsur, trombone –– will perform in the first of Newport Classical’s four community concerts. Their program includes Bach’s Sinfonias, Beethoven’s Trio, Bartok’s Rumanian Dance, Chick Corea’s Children’s Songs, Summertime by Gershwin, and Piazzola’s Libertango.

 

 

These three world-class virtuoso soloists have come together to revolutionize the brass trio. Audiences can enjoy a casual and engaging concert right in their own Newport neighborhood, featuring unique Classical and Jazz masterworks of all eras that have been adapted for this innovative instrumentation. The New York Brass Arts Trio is a group brimming with talent and experience. A former featured performer and arranger with the Canadian Brass, Burgstaller has performed in front of more than 40 orchestras and accrued recording accolades that include solo albums, three Top-10 Billboard hits, and a Top-50 JazzRadio hit. Jolley is a founding member of the Grammy-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, has performed as a soloist with major orchestras, and collaborated with major string quartets, including Guarnieri, Orion and American.

 

A prolific performer, Avitsur has premiered over 80 compositions and is the only trombonist to be named an Emerging Artist by Symphony Magazine (2005 and 2007). Beyond their extensive performing credits, all three musicians also hold teaching positions at major American musical institutions (Peabody Institute, Manhattan School, Mannes, North Carolina School for the Arts, Queens College and Westchester University).

 

Up next on September 9, Newport Classical opens its 2022-2023 Chamber Series concerts at its home venue Recital Hall at Emmanuel Church (42 Dearborn St.) with a performance by rising-star violist Matthew Lipman and pianist Henry Kramer in music by J.S. Bach, Schumann and Brahms, as well as Gabriela Lena Frank’s Cinco Danzas de Chambi, inspired by the work of Amerindian photographer Martín Chambi.

 

On October 7, Memphis-based flutist Adam W. Sadberry, known for his radiant tone, performs a program featuring the tango-inspired music of Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla, plus works by Valerie Coleman, Still, Perkinson, and Franck.

 

On November 4, the Grammy Award-winning Parker Quartet will perform a varied program featuring works by Beethoven, Bartok and Caroline Shaw.

 

Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Martinez performs a program on February 17, featuring selections by historical and living composers including Caroline Shaw and Viet Cuong, plus Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, among others.

 

Virtuoso 25-year-old violinist Randall Goosby will perform alongside pianist Ann Han on March 10, blending traditional and 20th century works of Beethoven, Grant Still, Ravel and Boulanger.

 

Cellist Thomas Mesa and pianist Ilya Yakushev perform a program on April 21 that unites the music of Bach and Rachmaninoff with contemporary works by Lera Auerbach and Kevin Day.

 

On May 19, the Kenari Quartet showcases the stylistic versatility of the saxophone in a program that features the music of Bach, Mendelssohn, Jennifer Higdon, and David Maslanka.

 

Then on June 9, violinist William Hagen will conclude the 2022-23 Chamber Series with a program featuring rarely heard works by Louise Farrenc, Clara Schumann, Harry Thacker Burleigh, and more.

Health & Safety

 

The safety of Newport Classical’s audience, musicians, staff, and volunteers continues to be the top priority, and with this in mind, the following precautions are currently in place, in line with industry best practices for indoor performances. Anyone attending a Chamber Series concert will need to show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination OR a negative PCR test taken in the prior 72 hours or antigen test taken in the prior 6 hours. Proof of vaccination or testing must be presented at time of entry.

 

 

In accordance with CDC and state guidelines, masks are no longer required, but recommended for indoor concerts. Newport Classical’s COVID-19 protocols remain subject to change and NC reserves the right to implement a masking requirement if cases begin to surge in Rhode Island. Any changes will be communicated to ticket holders in advance of their performance.
