Dartmouth College Names Its First Woman President

Dartmouth College Trustees elected cognitive scientist and Barnard College President Sian Leah Beilock as the Hanover, N.H. Ivy League institution’s first woman president. She’ll take over next July, succeeding Philip Hanlon. Beilock’s research has focused on brain science and performance anxiety in areas such as test-taking. Though Beilock is the first woman to be elected full president of Dartmouth, the college was led on an interim basis in 2012 by Provost Carol L. Folt, following the election of its then-president, Dr. Jim Yong Kim, to head the World Bank. Folt is now president of the University of Southern California.
Wentworth Institute of Technology appointed Rochester Institute of Technology mathematical engineer and dean Sophia A. Maggelakis to be the Boston institute’s next senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, effective Aug. 15. Maggelakis founded the Rochester institute’s School of Mathematical Sciences.
Boston University associate professor of infectious diseases Dr. Nahid Bhadelia, who founded the university’s Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases Policy & Research, was tapped as senior policy advisor for the White House Covid-19 Response Team. Dr. David Hamer, also a professor of infectious diseases at the university, will serve as interim head of center, while Bhadelia takes a sabbatical to serve on the White House team.
Dr. Vasan Ramachandran, a public health researcher at Boston University and principal investigator of the Framingham Heart Study, was chosen as founding dean of the new University of Texas School of Public Health San Antonio.
