Comings and Goings …

Lynn Malerba

President Joe Biden appointed Lynn Malerba, chief of the Mohegan Tribe, as treasurer of the United States, the first Native American to hold the position.

Malerba earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Connecticut’s University of Saint Joseph (USJ) in 1983 (then called Saint Joseph College), received USJ’s Distinguished Alumni Nightingale Health Science Award in 2017 and served on USJ’s Board of Trustees from 2010 to 2013 and from 2015 to 2017. As U.S. treasurer,

Malerba’s signature will appear on the nation’s currency. At the time of her appointment, the Department of the Treasury also announced establishment of a new Office of Tribal and Native Affairs to coordinate tribal relations across the department and be led by the treasurer.

Greenfield Community College selected Michelle Schutt, currently vice president of community and learner services at the College of Southern Idaho, that state’s first Hispanic serving institution, to be the next president of the western Massachusetts community college. She will succeed interim President Richard Hopper.

The University of Rhode Island named University of Miami Associate Vice President for Communications Matthew McDonald to be the Ocean State university’s vice president for communications and marketing, starting Aug. 1. The new VP position replaces the position of executive director of external relations and communications, which has been held on an interim basis by Linda Acciardo, who plans to retire.

Before joining Miami, McDonald held posts at Northeastern University, Emerson College and Penn State, and was a women’s basketball assistant coach at the College of William & Mary and UNC Asheville.

Mitchell College appointed  Catherine “Cathy” Hurd as its interim vice president of enrollment. Hurd recently served as vice president of student enrollment management and student experience at Bennett College and, prior to that, in similar positions at Pfeiffer University and Johnson C. Smith University.

Amherst College Director of Alumni Engagement Carol Allman-Morton was named director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Berkshire Community College.

Amanda Shaw, recently associate director of career planning at New York’s Russell Sage College, was named director of career education at Sacred Heart University.
