Notes from Commissioner Infante-Green
Empowering Our Students to Lead
In 2018, a group of students and families filed a lawsuit against the state alleging that our state’s civics education was so lacking that it violated their constitutional rights.
A thorough education in our nation’s laws and systems is deeply important to ensuring that students leave our schools ready to thrive in the real world, and it has been a priority of Rhode Island to improve our civics education.
I am excited to share a new development in that work.
After a federal judge dismissed the lawsuit, we began working with the students and their lawyers to find a solution together. This week, we were proud to announce that we’ve reached an agreement, and we are going to assemble a statewide civics education task force that will include some of the students who so bravely advocated for themselves and their peers.
We’re excited to share more details later this summer, and even more excited to work alongside these young fighters.
Today, let’s recognize the excellent work of our civics and social studies teachers who embolden our youth to make their voice heard, and the students who are willing to stand up and speak. Thank you for your dedication to making our state a better place!
