June Brings Many Events at Linden Place Mansion
June will feature a community reading from Linden Place’s writers’ residency, and talk with renowned author, Skip Finley and the return of walking tours.
Linden Place Mansion, a historic house museum in the center of Bristol, Rhode Island will present a variety of programs and events in June, including:
Bristol & The Slave Trade Walking Tours- Linden Place’s most popular guided tour returns for the 2022 season. This walking tours of Linden Place Mansion and downtown Bristol is focused specifically on Bristol’s DeWolf Family and their involvement in the transatlantic slave trade.
The guided tours take place on select Thursday afternoons and begin at Linden Place, the Federal-style mansion built by architect Russell Warren for George DeWolf.
The tour then continues through the center of historic Bristol and down to the waterfront pointing out significant sites tied to Bristol’s lengthy and profitable involvement in the slave trade.
Tours take place on select Thursdays at 1:30pm, including: June 2, June 16 and June 30.
Writer’s Residency Community Reading -After spending the month of April working on the grounds of Linden Place, eight creative writers will present their works-in-progress at a unique community reading and moderated discussion by Valerie Tutson from the RI Black Storytellers, on Thursday June 2nd from 6:30 p.m.
Poetry, screenplays, fiction of all genres, including sci-fi and fantasy, a TV pilot and more will be read by the authors.
The audience will meet on the front lawn of the property and then travel around the exterior of the mansion to various “stops” where the writers will read from their works.
The last stop will be the ballroom where the audience will sit for a moderated discussion with the writers. In the case of rain, the event will take place in the ballroom.
Author Talk with Skip Finley, Award-Winning Writer- Join Linden Place Mansion and Herreshoff Marine Museum on Tuesday, June 7th at 7pm in the Linden Place Ballroom where Martha’s Vineyard author, Skip Finley will lead us on his fascinating journey of discovery, based on his best-selling book, “Whaling Captains of Color, America’s First Meritocracy”.
Working with archival records at whaling museums, in libraries, from private archives and studying hundreds of books and thesis, Finley will share some of the best stories from the lives of over 50 Whaling Captains of Color.
