REED – WHITEHOUSE – LANGEVIN

Reed, Whitehouse, and Langevin Highlight Life-Changing Benefits of the Advanced Child Tax Credit Payments for 173K RI Kids

Cranston, RI – Members of Rhode Island’s congressional delegation will tomorrow morning join local advocates and families with young children at the Pastore Youth Center to highlight the more than $200 million delivered to local parents in recent months through the expanded Child Tax Credit included in the American Rescue Plan.

Rhode Island’s congressional delegation has strongly advocated for an extension of the expanded Child Tax Credit program to be included in Democrats’ pending Build Back Better legislation.

All four members of the delegation supported the American Rescue Plan, which increased the Child Tax Credit to $3,600 per child under the age of six and $3,000 per child aged six through seventeen for 2021.

The law also made the credit fully refundable for the first time and allowed families to receive half of the annual benefit though advanced monthly payments from July through December.

Parents receive payments up to $300 per month for children up to five years old and $250 per month for children ages six to seventeen.

The rest of the credit will be included in tax refunds during the spring filing season.

About 173,000 Rhode Island children have benefitted from the advanced Child Tax Credit payments so far this year.

Well over $200 million will have been disbursed to local parents when the November payments are released tomorrow.

For families that do not typically file income taxes, tomorrow is the last day to apply for the 2021 monthly Child Tax Credit payments on IRS.gov.
