WHO WANTS TO DREDGE UP THE TEN MILE RIVER IN NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH

“TEN MILE RIVER RAMBLES”

Have you seen where a MA Federal Rep wants to find funds to dredge the Ten Mile River in North Attleboro?

BY DON DOUCETTE

There are many places on the river in a number of communities needing a dredge. But, always the pregnant questions in the aftermath….the quality of sediments being removed i.e. latent toxicity? What to do with containment of material being removed? Where to dispose etc.?

Will the dredging of the Ten Mile core in North Attleboro totally solve the flooding problem?

We have known that the necessary flood plain to help avoid flooding during the years has been filled and developed i.e. 21 East as the most recent glaring example of a mismanaged flood plain. And…as the WPA historic wall system yet exists throughout the community…what to do with that ill-conceived restrictive situation adding to the flooding problem?

I personally feel that the MA Federal Rep needs to do more work educating (we all do) about the number of causes of storm flooding in North Attleboro. Or…elsewhere.

All for finding a solution, but short on possibilities as town planners during the years have boxed themselves, and taxpayers, in a corner regarding positive solutions. Always the quick fix – bait and switch the local taxpaying property owner. Result, always a partial solution.

Do we destroy existing development to help restore naturally functioning floodplain?

Is enough funding available to solve the total flooding problem – REALLY?

Do we install strategic lift pumps for periodic use or continue to call out emergency services for bandaid storm water flood mitigation? Lift pump water to where? Always the quick fix.

Federal funding? We all pay.

Just a layperson here thinking out loud, not an expert, just years of observation. Trying to logically think this nagging flood situation through. Flooding? A real ongoing problem here in River City with no quick fix.

Not to mention dams.
