November 2021 Highlights from the Audubon Society of Rhode Island

 

(October 1, 2021) – Bundle up on a cool, quiet November evening to search for owls or take a guided nature walk and learn how wildlife prepares for winter. Discover a unique paper montage art exhibit or learn about nature photography from an expert. Nature awaits in November, get out and join the fun with Audubon!

Masks are required during Audubon indoor programs and van trips for those who have not been vaccinated for COVID-19, including children.

Wednesday Morning Bird Walks

Locations Across Rhode Island

Audubon offers small-group Wednesday Morning Bird Walks with naturalist Laura Carberry. Each week a new birding destination will be chosen. Advance registration is required. Location will be sent to registered participants in advance.

Locations determined weekly; Every Wednesday through June 2022; 9:00-11:00 am; Fee: $5/member, $10/non-member. Ages: 14+.  Register through the events calendar at asri.org.

 

For the Love of Nature

Paper Montage Artistry by Galen Snow

Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium, Bristol, RI

November 1 – December 27, 2021; 9:30 am – 4:30 pm

Artist Galen Snow’s paper montage paintings have evolved over her nine years working in the medium. Her attention to detail and realistic, yet abstract interpretations of birds, flowers and landscapes are created over many hours of work in her studio.  By cutting, tearing, and gluing of fine papers, she uses shape, color and texture to re-create moments she has experienced in nature. Galen’s Show will open the first of November.

White Barn Story Time: Time to Sleep by Denise Fleming
Audubon Caratunk Wildlife Refuge, Seekonk, MA

November 4, 2021; 2:00-3:00 pm

Come to the big barn at Caratunk for special story time that focuses on nature! Listen to this warm and inviting book that delightfully explains hibernation and migration to young children. The story will be told in a puppet show format! After the story, go for a guided walk to enjoy autumn foliage and look for animals described in the story.

Beavers of Fisherville

Audubon Fisherville Brook Wildlife Refuge; Exeter, RI

November 5, 2021: 5:00 – 6:30 pm
Join Audubon for an evening walk and discussion regarding the beavers that have taken up residence in the Fisherville Pond. We will look at beaver dams, lodges and hopefully the beavers themselves. At dusk, these creatures become active, so we may get to see these engineers at work. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a flashlight.

Getting Ready for Winter

Wildlife and plants have many adaptations to endure winter and reemerge in spring. Come to Caratunk to look for late fall adaptations and cold-weather survival strategies. Enjoy an easy walk on well-groomed trails. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. Bring water and a snack if desired.

Citizens Bank Free Family Fun Day

Take a morning hike through the fields and woods of Powder Mill Ledges to search for birds, mammals, and insects preparing for the winter months. Look for what they built or left behind. A great family program for ages 4 and up.

Explore Prudence Island

Prudence Island, RI

 November 6, 2021; 9:45 am – 4:45 pm
Head to Prudence Island for a day of walking, exploring and enjoying the beauty of Narragansett Bay. Take several short walks, look for harbor seals hauled out in the afternoon, search for returning sea ducks, and visit many of the Reserve’s properties. Please note that face masks will be required regardless of vaccination status while riding in the van. Due to limited space, registration is required. Bring your lunch, drinks, warm layers and good walking shoes!

Bird Photography Exploration

Are you interested in photographing birds but don’t know how to start? Join Tom Younkin on a nature photography walk for instruction on the basics of bird photography. Topics include how to locate your subject, lighting considerations, and composition. A quality camera with a lens of 300mm or greater is recommended.

Go Nutty with Audubon!

Audubon Powder Mill Ledges Wildlife Refuge, Smithfield, RI

November 13, 2021; 3:00 – 4:30 pm

Whether it’s a cone, a nut, or a seed, plants reproduce in many ways. Animals also eat those seeds, acorns and hickory nuts. Go on a seed and nut hunt through the field and woods and then return indoors to create a nut-inspired craft. Allergy alert: various nuts will be handled during this class.

Venomous Snakes

Sea Glass Workshop

Come design and create a beautiful pendant with sea glass found on local beaches.  Learn how to choose the right piece of glass and transform it using quick and easy wire wrapping techniques.
