A Message from Our Director and Board President
Library staff are asked to provide resources for patrons on a wide variety of topics for education and entertainment purposes every day. In recent weeks, some patron requests were found to have ulterior motives, putting staff in a difficult position.
After revisiting our materials selection policy and reviewing our customer service practices as a team, we want to assure the public that library staff will find the books, movies, articles, and more that you are looking for.
Our policies and procedures are regularly reviewed with the library’s Board of Trustees. Board President Charlie Oliver wanted to share his thoughts after our latest conversations.
-Amy Rhilinger, Director, APL
I feel the necessity to state what should be obvious. The Attleboro Public Library serves all of Attleboro’s citizens, without prejudice, regardless of how one might choose to sort, classify, or differentiate one person from another.
All are welcome.
We do not have a political viewpoint or agenda by which we seek to influence our community, nor do we conspire with other departments or institutions to champion any cause, other than literacy itself. We do not censor our purchases of materials or online resources to exclude particular points of view (except that we will filter out pornographic images from accessibility by minors).
While any individual will have their particular opinions on social, political, or religious matters, etc., our staff is required to remain neutral. If you are seeking information or materials espousing any particular point of view, our staff will attempt to locate it, either from our collection, from the collections of other libraries in our network, or online.
Thank you for your respect for our outstanding staff.
-Charles Oliver, President, Board of Library Trustees
