Dear Neighbors and Friends,
I have some big news to share with you: I’m running for Governor. In a moment, I’m going to ask for your help to build our campaign from day one. But first, I want to share why I’ve made this decision.
I’ve spent my life listening to powerful people tell me to slow down. To think smaller. To wait.
But voters didn’t send me to Beacon Hill to wait for change. Every day it’s getting harder for working families to live here. Health care and housing costs get higher. Black and brown kids face yawning opportunity gaps. The climate crisis threatens jobs and safety.
That’s why I’ve been proud to join with you to unapologetically fight for the things working families actually need in Massachusetts.
The trouble is: too many of our leaders are still more interested in keeping power than in doing something with it.
I’m running for Governor to change that. A better Massachusetts is possible. And we have the power to build it, if we come together as a grassroots movement across the state.
From criminal justice reform to a historic increase in funding for low-income schools to LGBTQ equal rights, Beacon Hill insiders said our ideas were impossible. But together, we made them the law.
My parents instilled in me the values of justice and equity — and taught me there’s no time to waste in doing good. My mom was a social worker here in Massachusetts. My dad came to America with $50 in his pocket and with the help of teachers, librarians, and lunch ladies along the way, became NASA’s first Latino astronaut.
If my mom can spend a lifetime helping kids escape poverty, our state can pass a Millionaires Tax to help more children get a better start in life.
And if America can send a poor kid from Costa Rica to space, our state can green our infrastructure and close the racial wealth divide.
Massachusetts is at a turning point now. We can’t go back to business as usual. It’s time for our leaders to run towards problems with the urgency and determination to solve them.
That’s the kind of fire we need in government.
That’s why I’m running for Governor. And I’m asking you to join me.
Saludos,
Sonia
