WSO’s Mission

The WSO brings classical and orchestral pops performances to communities across Rhode Island.  As a regional volunteer touring symphony, the WSO seeks to deliver high-quality live music and affordable performances to diverse communities.  WSO ensures accessibility and appeals to a wide-ranging audience of varied backgrounds through programming that fluctuates between classical and orchestral pops.

Following a 6-month+ recess from mid-March through September 2020, the WSO began a careful reintroduction to the rehearsal process through limited pod-based sessions from our host venue in East Greenwich in October 2020.

Utilizing research-based guidance for physical distancing, masking, and use of instrument filtering material, the WSO was able to reunite as a full ensemble in April 2021 in preparation for an upcoming performance at the GAMM Theatre: 1245 Jefferson Blvd, Warwick on Saturday- May 29, 2021 (7:30pm)

With a program that touches upon all that WSO represents as an organization dedicated to the performance of original classical and contemporary works, and popular selections, the May 29th performance: WSO in Concert…Finally! will be a culmination of all efforts of our membership and leadership to continue our activity through the massive challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The May 29th concert sponsored by: Robert’s Musical Instrument, will feature the following selections:

Manfred Overture  by Robert Schumann

Inferno and Paradiso from “The Divine Comedy” by Robert W. Smith

Symphony No. 6 “Pastoral” – Allegro ma non troppo

Salute to the Big Apple arranged by Calvin Custer

Selections from “Chicago” arranged by Ted Ricketts

America the Beautiful arranged by Carmen Dragon

Who is the WSO?

Established in 1966 by George Low as a continuing education opportunity through the Warwick Public Schools, the WSO is a non-profit regional orchestra with a diverse membership.  Catherine Gagnon is WSO’s fifth Music Director, and under her guidance, the WSO normally presents six to eight concerts annually.  With programs offered in a variety of settings and at affordable prices, WSO presents music representing the changing interests of our community including pops selections, the music of film and Broadway, popular works, and traditional orchestral repertoire.  WSO strives to balance concerts with pieces that are recognizable along with those that can develop our audience’s understanding of and appreciation for classical and contemporary music.

WSO’s Vision

WSO values our role in the fabric of the musical community of Rhode Island as a touring symphony.  We seek to share our creative work with communities that may not otherwise have easy access to quality live music events and are enthusiastic about performing in both traditional and unconventional spaces.  Our expanding membership of amateur adults, high school and college students, retired professionals, music educators, and life-long learners are dedicated to the social, spiritual, and cognitive benefits of presenting and attending live performances.

The WSO aims to provide an outlet for continued musical development for all our participants, serve as an artistic asset within our community, develop and diversify our audiences through a variety of programs and collaborative partnerships with both musical and non-musical organizations including charities, non-profits, and service agencies.  Our membership believes that music brings people together, and a concert can be more than just a concert.
