RIPTA Seeks Public Input from Passengers on Long-Range Plan to Improve Service in West Bay and South County
Virtual Public Workshop Will Be Held Thursday, May 20, at 6 pm
Providence, Rhode Island, May 17, 2021 — The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) is proposing changes to Routes 8X, 13, 14, 21, 22, 29, 30, 62, 66, 203, 210 and 231 as the transit authority works on a long-range plan to improve service in West Bay and South County communities. Passengers are invited to view the proposed changes at https://www.ripta.com/projects/fall2021/ and submit their feedback at a virtual workshop on Thursday, May 20, 2021. The workshop will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm and participants are asked to please sign up in advance by emailing
marketing@ripta.com or by leaving a message at 401-784-9500, ext. 1242.
Some areas that RIPTA has identified as needing new or improved service include:
- Center of New England, Coventry
- Bald Hill Road, Warwick
- New England Institute of Technology, East Greenwich
- Jefferson Blvd., Warwick
- Kent County Courthouse, Warwick
- Westerly
- South County Hospital, South Kingstown
- South County Commons, South Kingstown
RIPTA officials said that the workshop is the beginning of continued public conversations as the Authority looks to make incremental service changes over the next couple of years to improve West Bay and South County service. The long-term goal of improving service in the West Bay and South County areas is being guided by passenger needs as well as the State’s recently adopted Transit Master Plan. The changes will also build on new service hubs that RIPTA will be creating at the Community College of Rhode Island’s Warwick campus and the main campus of the University of Rhode Island in South Kingstown.
These proposed service changes will be implemented over the course of the next few years. An overview of the changes being proposed for Fall 2021 is provided at RIPTA.com/Fall2021. The web page summarizes the routes that will be affected and also provides an interactive map where the public can leave comments. Some of the routes with proposed changes for this fall are Routes 8X, 13, 14, 21, 21, 29, 30, 62 and 69.
