ABOUT THE JUROR: Francoise McAree
Francoise McAree, born in Montreal, Canada, is a Providence based artist, independent curator, educator and arts administrator. Trained as a painter, she works across a wide variety of mediums and processes, including oils, acrylics, encaustic, photography, photo transfer, collage, textiles, sewing, embroidery, drawing and sculpture in her practice. The exploration of aspects of physicality and materiality—skin, membranes, body parts, portraits/heads, petals, masterwork, abstraction are among her ongoing visual references. In her work, she examines concepts of mortality, constructs of beauty, the underpinnings of masterwork paintings, and optical illusion. Working at the intersection of craft/making and painting, she considers how the attributes of painting– surface, brushstroke, tactility, “skin”, rhythm and depth of color through layering, etc.–can be translated into other materials and techniques. This strategy of translation explores the expressive power of materials and is at the core of her process.
Francoise has exhibited her work in many shows locally including at AS220, Hera Gallery, Chazan Gallery/Wheeler School, Bannister Gallery, Rhode Island College, Yellow Peril Gallery and in the US and abroad. She has curated numerous shows including Paper Dolls, a 4-artist collaborative residency project in conjunction with the Providence Athenaeum and AS220, and Glue, Paper, Scissors at ColoColo Gallery in New Bedford, MA. Additionally as Chair/Exhibitions Committee of the Hive Archive, a feminist collective, she orchestrated many exhibits including In Your Face, a self-portrait exhibit of over 300 local and international female artists, Artists in the Archive, an artist residency project at the Providence Athenaeum with an exhibit at AS220 Project Space and Crossing Currents: Feminism Now, a 40 artist group show at the Feinstein Gallery of URI’s Providence campus. As an educator, Francoise has taught at Rhode Island College, RISD/CE, Parsons School of Design, both in Paris and NY, and until recently was the Fine and Applied Art Program Manager in RISD/CE. Prior to living in Providence, Francoise lived and worked in NYC, Paris, France and Tokyo, Japan. She received a grant to study calligraphy for 9 months in Japan and was awarded a teacher of excellence award from Parsons School of Design/New School for Social Research. She earned her BA from Middlebury College in Vermont and her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania.
