Purchasing Board Approves RFQ for Capping of Grotto Avenue Landfill
PAWTUCKET – The City continues investments in a cleaner and greener environment for the community. After a nine-month working group consisting of three City administrators and two City Council members, including the district Councilor, as well as input from the community, the City Council authorized the City on December 22, 2020 to enter into a Transfer Station Operation and Lease Agreement with Waste Connections of RI. Now, the Purchasing Board has approved a Request for Qualifications for design and construction services for the capping of the existing Grotto Avenue Landfill.
“We continue to make collective progress alongside the City Council on a fully-enclosed and state-of-the-art facility,” said Mayor Donald R. Grebien. “The City is pleased that the process is continuing on capping the landfill. I thank the City Council for their continued commitment to the quality of life of the neighboring residents and city as a whole.”
Throughout the process to become cleaner and greener, the City will have a modern transfer station facility and modern transfer station services for residents and businesses. The City also transitioned to fully automated trash in 2020 which has provided a cleaner environment.
The agreement to operate the transfer station for an initial period of 10 years will authorize the contractor to construct a new transfer station building and associated ancillary facilities on the premises.
