GEORGE WILEY CENTER
On the day after the election, while we wait for the determination of the presidential and other elections, we can’t wait on the future, or let it distract from the day to day organizing that is at the core of our ongoing organizing.
For example, this week we worked with a George Wiley Center member who had their water shut off and was facing losing their Section 8 and potentially having their children taken because they could not afford the amount that the water authority was asking for restoration of their water service.
This family faced the same conditions that many are struggling with, lay offs and low wages that make it impossible to make ends meet. No one should be punished because they lack wealth, never mind put in physical danger. Obviously when you shut off people’s water during a pandemic, you are not only putting the residents of that household in harm’s way, but you are jeopardizing our communities who increase contact with people who don’t have access to running water.
While we find it shocking that anyone would have their water shut off during a pandemic, we need your support to turn sentiment into solidarity, to turn concern into action that gets results.
When we got a call from one of our members who had their water shut off, we sprang into action . We mobilize, calls, emails, letters and faxes that put pressure on the executive director of the Water Authority.
With your support we can continue to make tangible differences in people’s lives. We need your help so we can expand our organizing
Without organizing and direct action, then people would suffer injustice in isolation. We are depending on your support to help us boost our organizing capacity. We would like to have the ability to support organizers in each county in Rhode Island.
