DARLINGTON DOING BANNERS

Darlington District Group Sponsors Banners in Neighborhood

Pawtucket – The City of Pawtucket and Pawtucket City Council are pleased to announce that 48 banners sponsored by the Darlington District are going up in the Darlington neighborhood. The banners, that will help to identify and beautify the neighborhood, will be placed along the Central Avenue corridor from Cottage Street into Seekonk, MA.

“The City thanks the Darlington District group for their partnership in beautifying the neighborhood,” said Mayor Donald R. Grebien. “We truly appreciate their efforts in raising the funds to place the banners throughout Central Avenue and thank all of the businesses who participated in this initiative for your generosity and investment in our community.”

“We were able to line Central Avenue with banners because of the generosity local businesses and property owners in this neighborhood,” said Brenda L. Marchwicki, of BisMarc Properties, who is now the new Chair of the Darlington District. “By creating a business identity we’re sending a message throughout Pawtucket and the neighboring communities to visit here and support local businesses and realize that our City has much to offer.”

“I started this project a couple of years ago for the love of the neighborhood I grew up in. I thank all of the businesses in the Darlington District group that took pride on improving the street,” said Maureen McCarthy LaChapelle who found the organization in October 2019. LaChappelle has since relocated to 110 Smithfield Avenue in Pawtucket after a fire destroyed her building.

The Darlington Districts banner project consisted of getting Central Avenue businesses to sponsor banners for the printing of banners, hardware, and for any regulatory fees charged by utility companies to place the banners up. The Department of Public Works has placed about half of the 48 banners on poles to date.

In mid-2019, the Darlington District also held a neighborhood clean up that welcomed over 35 business owners and volunteers. The group works alongside the City to continue beautifying the neighborhood and improving the quality of life.
