CCCC HIGHLIGHTS

CULTURAL CENTER OF CAPE COD

THE SOCIAL BRAIN – ONE WEEK IN

It has been just one week since we reopened the beautiful space that we all know and love, but It is already starting to feel like a pair of old jeans, fresh off the line. Familiar, warm, and ready for a night out.

We know that our brains are wired for socialization, which makes us eager to gather again. Evolution led to a remodeled and more intricate brainstem in humans, which is activated when we hear a soothing voice or see a relaxed face. These signs become our social safety cues. They contribute to our ability to feel safe near another person – even when socially distanced.

As social beings, we are pleased to have welcomed many of you through our doors to experience five new exhibitions in the galleries last week. It is truly a pleasure watching guests as they enjoy the “landscapes” only to realize through chats with staff or Barry Beder himself that these are actually “HullScapes,” photographs taken of the scum line of boats. This revelation is blowing people’s minds.

Our visitors have been likewise engaged by the work in connecting galleries by Elaine Gardner, Anaclaire Tecca, and our newest resident artist, Nate Olin.

You can feel the building taking a breath as people move through and as our team busily sets up for our next on-site event. You hear artists talking together about creating during the lockdown and long time supporters of the Center reminiscing about all the good times that have had together … and will have again.

“Connectedness with other mammals, other humans, is really, in a very pragmatic way, our purpose in life.” – Stephen W. Porges, Ph.D

We thank you for your support, presence, and patience as we continue to fulfill our mission and live up to our core ideology of All the Arts for All of Us .
