EL EDUCATION: TRIBUTE TO GREG FARRELL

Dear Friends,

“Greg Farrell is the only person I have ever met who regularly said, ‘Well, my flight was canceled but it was a great opportunity to explore the airport; I met some terrific people and learned a lot.’ Greg’s kindness, grace and joy in life were a model that I aspire to emulate every day.” —Ron Berger, Chief Academic Officer, EL Education. For many reasons, this isn’t a normal edition of our newsletter. On Sunday, March 29th, our Founding President and board member Greg Farrell passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, in New York City. Greg was a beautiful human being who led a remarkable life of purpose, adventure and contribution.

If you know EL Education, you know something of Greg’s character, even if you have never met him. There is a great deal about our organization that is inseparable from Greg the person: our vision for challenging, adventurous, and meaningful learning, and the crew culture that supports every student in mastering those opportunities. One of his greatest joys was knowing that all of you, our community, are building on his founding ideas and taking them to heights that he never imagined.

I invite you to learn more about Greg, and to leave a tribute to him here.

Greg once said, “People, no matter their age, need to feel and be viewed as capable. Everyone wants a purpose. When given the opportunity, they will rise to the challenge.”

Today, we face a challenge few of us imagined as we turn every shoulder in our organization—side by side with our partners—toward supporting students through school closures during the Coronavirus pandemic. With Greg Farrell’s sense of purpose in mind and courage in our hearts, we share our latest newsletter with you, dedicated to resources, guidance, and opportunities to connect with your community as we push through this challenge.
