The Institute for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies at Rhode Island College
Dear Friends,
We hope this newsletter finds you well.
We would like to give you an update on changes to our activities this semester. Unfortunately, all Portuguese Studies events scheduled for this semester at Rhode Island College have been cancelled. Also, all classes have resumed online until the end of the spring semester.
Even though
Rhode Island College’s 2020 Commencement Ceremony
has been cancelled, we will still celebrate our graduates, so look for an announcement about our Portuguese Studies 2020 Graduating Seniors later this spring!
During these times of medical emergency, a team of Institute interns and translators stepped up to provide translation support in Portuguese and Cape-Verdean Creole to community organizations.
Our students are working diligently while maintaining their academic classes online and in some cases, essential jobs. We want to recognize them here:
Joshua Abreu (World Languages Education-Portuguese Concentration; Spanish Minor)
Kassandra do Rosario (Justice Studies Major; Portuguese Minor)
Aleida Gomes (Psychology Major; Portuguese Minor)
Nyel Duarte (Justice Studies Major)
Our team has been supporting the efforts of PLEE (Parents Leading for Educational Equity) in disseminating official announcements and information about COVID-19 in multiple languages and to a wider audience. This community organization is led by RIC alumna, Ramona Santos ’18. You can visit their website here:
and find their daily announcements in multiple languages (including Portuguese and Cape-Verdean Creole ) here:

The team also continues to provide translation support to PALCUS’ Make Portuguese Count™ campaign!
The 2020 Census has been available since March 12th, and 31% of the US population has already completed it. Visit the MPC website for more information about this national campaign, and learn how to declare your ancestries on the Census self-response form:

We look forward to meeting again soon, and wish Boa Saúde to all,
