City Extends Traffic Camera Safety Program Warning Period with Focus on Bringing Awareness
Warning Violations to be Issued Until October 28th
Pawtucket – The City of Pawtucket and the Pawtucket Police Department have announced that the Traffic Camera Safety Program warning period will be extended with a focus on bringing awareness of school zone safety to residents and drivers.
“The City’s priority is the safety of our children and their families who walk to school every day,” said Mayor Donald R. Grebien. “I want to thank the City Council, School Committee, Police Department, and Superintendent’s office for their partnership throughout the entire implementation of the program.”
“The primary focus is to educate our drivers with the goal of lowering speeds in the school zone areas prior to the start of the violations,” said Acting Public Safety Director and Police Chief Tina Goncalves. “The Police Department continues to stress the importance of safe driving and observing posted speed limits, especially around our school zones for the safety of our students and their families. We will continue to inform drivers through various avenues.”
The Public Camera Safety Program began in August 28th. The City and Sensys Gatso, the contractor, began promotion since the program was first announce in December of 2018. The Police Department and School Department, most recently, used school mascots to bring attention to the speed zone in the school zone areas of Potter Burns Elementary School and Goff Middle School located on Newport Avenue and of Nathanael Greene located on Smithfield Avenue. The City is committed to continuously looking into additional ways to bring awareness to drivers beyond the traffic signs, social media, pamphlets, paid ads and media campaigns to ensure everyone’s safety.
Previously, the General Assembly passed legislation that revised the camera safety program. The changes included;
- lowering the violation from $95.00 to $50.00 for school speed violations;
- restricting school camera operations to school days only;
- and limiting operations from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.
