LTE: “NELLIE’S NOTES”

Dear Friend,

With the start of this school year, I’ve been encouraged by the increased focus on improving public education in our state. We must all work together to ensure that every child in Rhode Island receives a quality education that prepares them for success and, I believe, also includes a strong civics component. Our children should have a basic understanding of how their government works and how they can influence public discourse.

That’s why my office has developed, in collaboration with educators, a cadre of

multimediaeducation

resources for teachers and parents available at

www.sos.ri.gov.

It’s also why we’ve made our State Archives and State House tours an experiential civics & history lab – so Rhode Island students can learn and be proud of their history.

We’ve also developed a first-in-the-nation program that lets high school students vote on real ballots, with real voting machines, for elections that actually matter to them – student government elections. The following video clip recaps a recent election at Mt Pleasant High School in Providence.

Our children deserve the best possible education and I’m doing my part to ensure that it also includes a civics component.

From expanding civics education to safeguarding elections, I’m proud of the work we are doing and profoundly grateful for your generous, ongoing support which directly helps us raise awareness and increase engagement. Thank you.

Warmly,

Nellie
