Author of The Doctor Broad: A Mafia Love Story to speak at the Weaver Library
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I.– Dr. Barbara Roberts, author of The Doctor Broad: A Mafia Love Story will speak at the Weaver Library on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at 7 pm.
Barbara Roberts was a devout Catholic schoolgirl who grew up to be a physician, an atheist, feminist, anti-war activist – as well as a Mob doctor and Mob mistress.
On a fateful December night in 1980, Dr. Roberts agreed to take on the care of the aging crime boss, Raymond L. S. Patriarca.
A few hours after, he was arrested on a charge of accessory and conspiracy to murder. She kept him alive and out of jail having no inkling of the deluge of publicity that would result, nor the lifelong costs.
Doctor Broad however, is not just a mafia story – it is the story of a woman born in mid-twentieth-century America who was raised in one world but came of age in another; who expected to live one life but found herself ad-libbing something very different.
The first woman to practice adult cardiology in the state of Rhode Island, Dr. Roberts founded and directed the Women’s Cardiac Center at the Miriam Hospital for close to fifteen years. She is the recipient of many awards, has written numerous books, and was named a Top Doctor for Women three times by RI Monthly.
Books will be available for sale from Books on the Square in Providence.
