THE HYPOCRISY OF DEMOCRATIC POLITICIANS ON SCHOOL CHOICE

Rhode Island Public Radio reported that a majority of Providence Democratic politicians’ children attend either private or charter schools.

Governor Gina Raimondo declared that: “Every parent should make the decision that they think is best for their kid and not apologize for it”.

While she and other Democratic politicians are able to send their children to charter or private schools, thousands of parents are forced to send their children to a Providence public school system which has received national attention as one of the worst in the country.

Rhode Island Republican Party Chairman Sue Cienki commented: “It is utter hypocrisy for any elected official to take advantage of school choice while limiting the ability of their own constituents to do the same. While politicians and public officials talk about changing the Providence school system, thousands of children remain trapped in one of the worst school systems in the country. It is time to give all parents, not just elected officials, the ability to send their children to a school of their choice. The various restrictions on charter schools should be eased or eliminated. Also, legislation should be adopted to assist disadvantaged children in failing school districts to go to private school.

Cienki concluded: “This school year will likely be just another year where thousands of Providence school children will be denied the education they deserve.  Every year we deny a parent the ability to send their child to the school of their choice is another year a child falls further behind.”
