SLATER SATURDAYS: FREE HANDWEAVING CLASSES

Free handweaving drop-ins at Slater Mill on Saturdays in August

(Pawtucket, RI)   Want to try your hand at weaving, but not ready to commit to taking a class?

Or are you just looking for a creative way to fill a couple of summer hours?

Trad Arts Studio at Old Slater Mill is hosting five free Saturday morning drop-ins during the month of August.  Bring the family for Drop In & Weave!, and try something new.

Anytime between 10 a.m. and Noon, the public is invited to stop by the mill at 67 Roosevelt Avenue in downtown Pawtucket to try out handweaving in the mills Trad Arts Studio space.

Its informal, and there are no expectations, said Samantha Lavoie, museum manager at Slater Mill. Guests of any age can come for five minutes, or for an hour, and just work at their leisure to get a feel for handweaving.

For these sessions, the types of looms available for use include cardboard looms, for the youngest and smallest weavers; table-top looms by Melissa & Doug, offering a little more challenge and perspective to adventurous children and teens; and, for teens through adult, the Cricket loom offers a more advanced feel and product.

Well have a couple of staff members on hand to help explain how to work on the looms, and to give a basic introduction, but its fine to work completely independently too, adds Lavoie. Its a fun craft and it can be very satisfying to watch something take shape on a loom.

Program dates are August 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31.  Slater Mill is located at 67 Roosevelt Avenue in downtown Pawtucket, next to City Hall. The program is held on the second floor of the yellow mill, and is accessible by wheelchair lift. Parking is free in the lot next to the mill.

Drop in & Weave! is offered with the support of RI State Council on the Arts, the Phyllis Kimball Johnstone Foundation, Berocco, the City of Pawtucket and The Carter Fund.  For more information email info@slatermill.org, or call 401-725-8638 x.106.
