F WEAVER edited

Weaver Library invites you to take part in Reading Across Rhode Island 2019! A vibrant statewide reading and discussion program, Reading Across RI brings together book and library lovers of all ages inspiring important community conversations.

Join us on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at 6:30 pm when Living Literature begins the evening program with dramatic excerpts from the 2019 selection What the Eyes Don’t See: A Story of Crisis, Resistance, and Hope in an American City by Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha.

Performing at Weaver Library will be actors Lara Hakeem, Kelly Seigh and Artistic Director, Barry Press.

This is Living Literature’s tenth year creating programs for Reading Across RI, and as always, the presentation promises to be thoughtful, provocative and an excellent introduction to the book’s themes of environmental and racial justice.

A book discussion will follow the presentation.

What the Eyes Don’t See is the compelling story of how a pediatrician, accompanied by a team of researchers, parents, friends, and community leaders, proved that Flint’s children were exposed to lead and then fought her own government and a brutal backlash to expose that truth.

Paced like a scientific thriller, this book underscores how misguided austerity policies, the withdrawal of democratic government, and bureaucratic indifference placed an entire city at risk.

At the center of the story is Dr. Mona herself—an immigrant, doctor, scientist, and mother whose family’s activist roots inspired her pursuit of justice.
