EAST PROVIDENCE AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

Celebrate Black History Month With Us!

E MIM MLK

The East Providence Public Library and the East Providence Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Office will present a celebration of Black History Month honoring two New England artists on Wednesday February 20, 2019 from 6 – 8:00pm at East Providence City Hall.

The evening begins with a moving portrayal of sculptor Nancy Elizabeth Prophet, Rhode Island School of Design’s first graduate of color (1918.) Actress Sylvia Ann Soares reads dramatic excerpts of Prophet’s diary with incidents of her Paris life, her struggles and success.

Following Soares’ presentation will be a short film about Ashley Bryan, renowned artist, writer, storyteller and humanitarian, who, at 17, was told by a college art program that his was “the best portfolio we have seen, but it would be a waste to give a scholarship to a colored student.”

The Celebration also showcases two powerful displays highlighting African-American History by local residents and history experts Mrs. Onna Moniz-John and Mr. Jerry Spinola.

East Providence City Hall is located at 145 Taunton Avenue, East Providence, RI 02914.

This program is free and open to all.
