Just 24-hours after Rhode Island Treasurer Seth Magaziner announced that 35,000 Rhode Islanders will be automatically reunited with their missing money this holiday season, more than 2,500 additional claims have been??initiated through??the Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property division.

Treasurer Magaziner announced YOUR MONEY, a new program which will reunite many Rhode Islanders with their unclaimed property automatically. While more than $10 million is slated to be automatically returned to more than 35,000 Rhode Islanders, the Treasurer’s Office has money for thousands of Rhode Islanders whose current addresses have not been matched.

Within minutes of the announcement, Rhode Islanders began searching the program’s online database at www.findRImoney.com. By Tuesday morning, more than 2,500 additional claims have been initiated.

“My goal is to ensure that as many Rhode Islanders as possible get their missing money back in their pockets where it belongs,” said Treasurer Magaziner. “My staff is working hard to return peoples’ money to them as quickly as possible – which may make this holiday season just a little bit merrier.”

Unclaimed property can include money left in old bank accounts and safe deposit boxes, uncashed paychecks, unused gift certificates, unreturned utility deposits, uncollected insurance payments and forgotten stocks and dividends. Typically, property is turned over to Rhode Island Treasury if it has been unclaimed by its owner for three years. However, wages and utility deposits are turned over to the State after one year.

Rhode Island Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Division is currently holding over $295 million of unclaimed property waiting to be returned to its rightful owner.

Searching for and claiming property is free, and simple.
