FSRI Fights Student Absenteeism During National Walk to School Day
Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza and Pawtucket Red Sox Mascot “Paws” Join Providence??Students on FSRI’s Walking School Bus.
PROVIDENCE, RI-Joining over 4,400 schools across the nation, Mayor Jorge Elorza and the Paw Sox mascot “Paws,” will lead groups of Providence Elementary Students as part of Family Service of Rhode Island’s (FSRI) Walking School Bus. FSRI is registered as part of The National Center for Safe Routes to School National Walk to School Day.
Chief Executive Officer, Margaret Holland McDuff, expressed thanks to Mayor Elorza and the Paw Sox for their unwavering support of the program. “It is through our many partnerships, like those with Mayor Elorza, the City of Providence, and the PawSox, that FSRI has been able to positively impact the lives of so many over the last 125 years. We thank them for their support and their participation in The Walking School Bus today.”
FSRI’s Walking School Bus mobilizes trained volunteer mentors to meet children at their homes and walk with them to school – ensuring that children arrive safely, on-time, and ready to learn. FSRI’s Walking School Bus is designed to combat chronic absenteeism and provide positive role models in the lives of students.
The Walking School Bus currently serves four schools in three Providence neighborhoods: Washington Park, Smith Hill and Lower South Providence – Fogarty Elementary, Feinstein at Broad Street Elementary, Young/Woods Elementary, and Kizirian Elementary.
