Hispanic Heritage Month Kick-Off Celebration at the Steel Yard Celebraci??n del Mes de la Herencia Hispana
??
On September 13th, ??Trinity Repertory Company, Rhode Island Latino Arts and the Steel Yard are hosting a free, family friendly, outdoor event and kick-off celebration in honor Hispanic Heritage Month!
The afternoon will feature music, delicious food and an extra special showcase of scenes from Shakespeare en El Verano’s bilingual English-Spanish adaptation of Romeo & Juliet.??
Come celebrate art, community and Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15th- October 15th) at the Steel Yard (27 Sims Ave. Providence, RI 02909)! Gates will open at 4 PM and the celebration will go until 7pm!
Shakespeare en el Verano (Shakespeare in the Summer) – a two-year old program produced by Trinity Rep and Rhode Island Latino Arts (RILA) – travels to a variety of public venues throughout the state of Rhode Island to share reinterpretations of some of Shakespeare’s greatest classics with new eyes and ears.
This summer’s production of Romeo and Juliet – written/co-directed by Brown/Trinity Rep MFA student Marcel Mascaro – drew upon contemporary forms of Spanish, new music, and a new group of performers under Trinity Rep’s associate artistic director, Tyler Dobrowsky. Romeo and Juliet toured throughout Providence this in July 2017. “I’m thrilled to build on the tremendous success of last summer and bring back our Shakespeare en el Verano program.
I’m also incredibly grateful we once again get to partner with Rhode Island Latino Arts and their wonderful executive director, Marta V. Mart??nez,” said co-director Tyler Dobrowsky. “Great art belongs to everyone – by removing the barriers of cost, location and language, we will bring this free, mobile and bilingual production of Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet to the vibrant community of Providence and Rhode Island.”
In addition to the performances of Shakespeare en el Verano, guests who attend the September 13th Celebration are invited to participate in a post-show pl??tica – a discussion led by RILA & Trinity Rep. By hosting this pl??tica, we’re hoping the Yard can serve as a space for conversation. An opportunity for both the young and old to think about what they saw, and share what it meant to them through discussion and a number of creative activities.
This event is made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts’ Art Works grant program and the City of Providence Department of Art, Culture & Tourism.
The Rhode Island Latino Arts is Rhode Island’s leading nonprofit organization exclusively dedicated to the promotion, advancement, development and cultivation of Latino arts, including the art, culture, history and heritage of Rhode Island Latinos.

In its 50-year history, the theater has produced 63 world premieres, mounted national and international tours, and, through its MFA program, trained hundreds of new actors and directors.
The Steel Yard is an award-winning industrial arts center and Providence’s largest private outdoor venue. ??The 3.8-acre campus, located in Providence’s Industrial Valley, is a cultural asset that serves as a sponsor and catalyst for innovative approaches to urban revitalization, arts promotion, workforce development, and community growth. The professional workspace allows for community access to equipment for welding, blacksmithing, jewelry, ceramics, and the foundry arts. The facilities at the Yard have become a vital component in the careers of hundreds of independent craftspeople and entrepreneurs who would not otherwise have the capacity to establish their businesses or perfect their crafts while allowing educators the ability to teach students new skills in a creative and communal environment. Over the last 10 years, the Steel Yard has contributed something distinct to the Arts community in Rhode Island by creating shared professional workspace, a venue for the advancement of new sculptural mediums, and a broader definition of public-art
