12 Adult Psychiatric Inpatient Beds Added for Patients with Co-Occurring Conditions

June 30, 2017 (South Attleboro, MA) ??? Arbour-Fuller Hospital today announced the addition of 12 psychiatric inpatient beds to further support the mental health needs of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. These beds are a critical resource for adults struggling with primary mental health issues and a secondary addictions disorder.

The Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH) approved the license for these additional beds, which were previously licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health???s Bureau of Substance Abuse Services (BSAS) as a dual diagnosis acute residential treatment program. The bed conversion comes at a time when the need to treat acute patients requiring inpatient level of care and who have co-occurring addictions issues is particularly significant. At times, these patients board in area Emergency Departments waiting for an available bed in a facility appropriate to meet their clinical needs.

???We are seeing a rise in the number of patients requiring adult inpatient treatment for co-occurring disorders. Various programs in Massachusetts address either mental or addictions disorders, but we are excited to introduce a program which is equipped to handle patients struggling with both issues concurrently with a clinical program dedicated to meet their needs,??? said Rachel Legend, CEO, Arbour-Fuller Hospital. ???The Department of Mental Health identified patients with substance abuse disorders as a specialty population in need of unique services, and we appreciated the opportunity to create much-needed additional capacity to accommodate this patient population here in the Commonwealth.?????

Arbour-Fuller Hospital now has a total of 102 inpatient beds, including 14 adolescent and 88 adult beds, with the new specialized unit treating primary behavioral health and secondary substance abuse issues.??
