Declaration of Independence at the Hempsted Houses

New London, CT ?????Join the staff of Connecticut Landmarks??? Hempsted Houses for a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence on Sunday, July 2nd at 2 pm, as we prepare to celebrate July 4th! It is too rare that we hear this important document read out loud, which announced that the thirteen American colonies, then under British rule, regarded themselves a new independent nation ??? the United States of America.
To give powerful voice to the Declaration of Independence, program participants from different parts of the New London community will share in the reading, coming together as whole. All are invited to hear these meaningful words as we celebrate the power of freedom and community. Admission is Free, sponsored by The Chester Kitchings Family Foundation.

About The Hempsted Houses
The 1678 Joshua Hempsted House is the oldest house in New London and is one of New England???s best-documented dwellings. Adjacent to the Joshua Hempsted House is a rare stone house built in 1759 by Nathaniel Hempsted. Both structures survived the 1781 burning of New London and stand today as testaments of 17th and 18th-century daily life.
