Fisher College will host its 10th annual Honor Your Veterans celebration, an event that recognizes the service and dedication of U.S. veterans connected to the Fisher community, on Wednesday, November 2nd.

This year???s keynote speaker will be Giselle Sterling, Commissioner of Veterans Services, City of Boston. Sterling is the first woman and first Latina to hold the position.

Prior to joining the City of Boston in 2012, Sterling served in the United States Marine Corps. In 2000 she completed basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina and was soon after trained as a Field Radio Operator with deployments to Kandahar, Afghanistan; the Philippines; Guam; Diego Garcia and Okinawa, Japan.

Giselle was honorably discharged in 2004 and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. Fisher College will also present its fourth annual Distinguished Veterans Awards to Francisco Urena, Secretary of Veterans Services for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Fisher College is continuing its tradition of and will once again observe activities through its Adopt-a-Soldier program.

The College created the program, independent of the traditional Adopt-a-Soldier affiliation, in 2009. All of the veterans who benefit from the program have a personal connection to the College, i.e. a former student, family friend, etc.

The Adopt-a-Soldier program began through a suggestion of Mike Wall, former Admissions Counselor.

Fisher College will be bringing back a World War II M3 Halftrack. After making its way down Storrow Drive, the halftrack will park in front of Fisher on Beacon Street at about 11:45am.

Throughout the day, students, faculty, staff, and neighbors are invited to take pictures of the historic army vehicle. M3 halftracks were widely used during World War II as a communications vehicle.

Fisher is also continuing its relationship with the New England Center and Home for Veterans (NECHV), teaching a course to those residing at the Center. The New England Center and Home for Veterans is dedicated to ending homelessness for our Nation’s Veterans.

The course, Computer Concepts and Applications, including books, is free to Veterans residing at NECHV. There are currently eight Veterans from NECHV enrolled in the course.

Fisher College is proud to be a Military Friendly institution for the last seven years.
