I–95 South
Over the next few weeks, we will be working to transition all travel lanes on I-95 South to the new Providence Viaduct bridge, which is being built immediately adjacent to the old bridge. We’ll do this one lane at a time, which will require temporary traffic shifts with a divided highway configuration.
The first phase of this work is scheduled to be in place on Saturday morning, October 22. Traffic will be able to use both sides of the traffic split to remain on I-95 South. There will be no need to change lanes as you approach bridge. Remember – the far right lane is for Atwells Avenue, as it has always been.????
The work to implement this change begins Friday night, October 21. Motorists will experience lane closures on I-95 South and Route 146 South starting at 10 p.m. as we set up the new traffic pattern. The new traffic pattern will be in place and all lanes opened by 6 a.m. Saturday morning. In the event of rain, the work to set up the new traffic pattern will take place on Saturday night instead, with the new traffic pattern going into effect on Sunday morning. Weekend Work??
We will close the right and middle lanes on I-95 South, from Exit 23 (Route 146/State Offices) to Exit 21 (Atwells Avenue), from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day. We will also take the right lane on Route 146 South, from Admiral Street to Exit 22 (Downtown Providence/Routes 6 & 10) on I-95 South, during the same time period. Delays are anticipated and, in the event of rain, both operations will be postponed until Saturday night, October 22.
On Saturday, October 22 (or Sunday, October 23, if we have a rain delay), we will have a new traffic pattern in place by 6 a.m. with a divided highway. All lanes on either side of the split will be available for through traffic for I-95 South. The far right lane will remain open as an exit-only lane for Atwells Avenue. Please remember to continue to reduce speeds and drive safely through all work zones.
Temporary Exit Closure
As we work to build the concrete wall to hold up the new bridge, Exit 22 off of I-95 South will be closed Sunday and Monday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.??
