Rhode Island Public Radio presents its 5th Annual Gala featuring This American Life host and producer, Ira Glass, at The Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence, Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 7:00 PM. The Gala is Rhode Island Public Radio???s signature event, honoring the organization???s founders, listeners, and donors and bringing the most talented public radio journalists in the country to Rhode Island.????
Glass is appearing for a ONE-NIGHT-ONLY performance live on stage at The Vets that will include a reunion with his former boss and mentor, Torey Malatia, who is currently the CEO of Rhode Island Public Radio.
Glass will tell stories about This American Life and give an on-stage demonstration of how he puts the show together. Glass started his career as an intern at National Public Radio before becoming a reporter and host at WBEZ Chicago in 1990. His distinctive style and experimentation with audio led to a natural creative partnership with WBEZ???s then CEO, Torey Malatia, who had been approached by a funder in 1995 to create an arts program at the station.
Their collaboration ultimately resulted in the formation of This American Life, premiering its first episode on November 17, 1995. Glass famously ends the show every week with a sound clip taken out of context and humorously misattributed to Torey Malatia.????
Rhode Island Public Radio went on the air in May of 1998 and is home to several award-winning journalists. CEO Torey Malatia was previously the CEO of WBEZ Chicago, where he co-founded This American Life and launched Wait, Wait, Don???t Tell Me, one of the most popular public radio programs in the country.
