Pawtucket, RI ????? Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island recently honored Kayla Cavallaro RN, of Pawtucket, a nurse on Hodgson 6 with the Daisy Award for July. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation???s program to recognize excellence in nursing.

Kayla has been a nurse at Memorial for about one year and a half. Patients and fellow staff members said she embodies the outstanding qualities of an extraordinary DAISY nurse. One of Kayla???s recent patients said,

???Kayla was one of the many nurses I had. During my stay, all the nurses did a wonderful job assisting me with my recovery. However Kayla not only did her job, she did it with a smile and an interest in my well being like I have never experienced. She knew when I needed help and when I needed space and brought a human element into her daily tasks. Her constant attention to small details, down to remembering I liked the blue pops the best was unparalleled during my stay. She made me feel like I was the only patient she had and was always smiling. She should, without a doubt, be given a Daisy award.???

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.????

Said Bonnie Barnes, president and co-founder of the DAISY Foundation, ???When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.???

Anyone can nominate an extraordinary nurse at Memorial by submitting an application online or in person.
