STATE HOUSE ??? Rep. Shelby Maldonado (D-Dist. 56, Central Falls) is one of 48 state leaders from across the nation selected for the prestigious Henry Toll Fellowship Program sponsored by the Council of State Governments (CSG).
Representative Maldonado, who was elected to the House in 2014, was selected from many applicants by a committee of state elected and appointed officials as one of the most promising leaders of state government. Rhode Island???s first elected official of Guatemalan descent, Representative Maldonado served on the Central Falls City Council, leading one of the poorest cities in the state into an era of financial independence and stability.
During her first legislative session in 2015, she championed civil rights legislation for women, sponsoring a bill signed into law that prohibits employers from discriminating against, and failing to provide reasonable accommodations for, employees due to pregnancy or medical conditions related to pregnancy or childbirth.
During the 2016 session, she sponsored a resolution creating a commission to study the Low and Moderate Income Housing Act and its compliance by cities and towns
The annual weeklong seminar, to be held Aug. 26-31 in Lexington, Ky., is named for CSG founder Henry Wolcott Toll.?? The fellowship is one of the nation???s premier leadership development programs for state government officials. Each year, Toll Fellows brings 48 of the nation???s top officials from all three branches of state government to Lexington for an intensive six-day, five-night ???intellectual boot camp.??? The program???s agenda includes a lineup of dynamic speakers and sessions designed to stimulate personal assessment and growth, while providing priceless networking and relationship-building opportunities.??Past Toll Fellowship graduates include governors, U.S. Senators and members of Congress as well as leaders in state government.??
