Rhode Island Shipwrecks: Nearer than You Think
David Robinson, an underwater archaeologist from the University of Rhode Island, will speak at the Weaver Library on Monday, June 13, 2016 at 7pm.????
Robinson will discuss the many shipwrecks and floating dry dock remains he has identified in a 35-acre area off Bold Point Park in East Providence, or in what he calls the “Providence Harbor Ship Graveyard.” This submerged cultural landscape was frozen in time at the height of Providence???s prominence as a maritime industrial port. ??Among the shipwrecks are the steamboats the??Mount Hope??and the??Bay Queen.??
Robinson will also speak to the challenges of studying, managing, and protecting these submerged resources, their potential value to local tourism and education, and their importance as a habitat for wildlife returning to the harbor as water quality improves.??
