North Attleboro HOOPS FOR HEART PROGRAM celebrates 18th year

North Attleboro Middle School continues to lead the nation by raising funds for the American Heart Association and the fight against heart disease.

North Attleboro (March 31, 2016) ??? The North Attleboro Middle School will participate for the 18th consecutive year in Hoops For Heart ??? the American Heart Association program that teaches kids about physical activity and heart health. The event is led by Physical Education teachers Jason Feid and John Dempsey.

North Attleboro students have raised $1,061,495.88 in the last 17 years for the fight against heart disease and stroke ??? making them the top Hoops For Heart fundraiser in the country for the last 14 years. Last year, North Attleboro students broke the national record for Hoops for Heart, by exceeding $1 million total dollars raised for the American Heart Association. More than 35,000 schools participate in Hoops For Heart in the United States.

?????We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our school and in particular our students,??? said Jason Feid, PE teacher at North Attleboro Middle School. ???The key to our success is due in part that the students here believe whole-heartedly in the mission of the American Heart Association. Our students get to the heart of the matter… and care about heart health!???

Fundraising efforts are already underway. The program wraps up at an after-school, five-hour event on Wednesday, April 27, 2016. Opening Ceremonies begin at 2:30 p.m.?? Kids will enjoy numerous physical activities, including basketball shooting competitions, a slam-dunk contest and a school wide 3 on 3 tournament. Local businesses and fitness companies will be on hand conducting activity booths throughout the day. Students will be tested and challenged in a variety of fitness activities with the opportunity to win prizes.?? Approximately 1,000 North Attleboro Middle School students participate in the program.

The American Heart Association???s Hoops For Heart program teaches students to set and achieve goals and discover that they can make a difference in the community while getting active! Regular physical activity in childhood and adolescence improves strength and endurance, reduces anxiety and stress, helps control weight, builds healthy bones and muscles, and increases self-esteem. Young people can build healthy bodies and healthy minds by establishing healthy lifestyles well into adulthood by including physical activity in their daily lives.
