Chorus of Westerly

The Chorus of Westerly Children in Concert

??E Westerley

The Chorus of Westerly presents a special concert event featuring the children and teenage singers of the Chorus on Friday, April 8, 2016 at 6pm. The spotlights will burn bright at the George Kent Performance Hall for the youth singers as they perform a program of folk songs from around the world. The event is free and open to the public. All are welcome to attend and support the young talent of the Chorus.

The program will feature a diverse array of musical selections including English, Appalachian, French Canadian, Zulu, and Australian folk songs. The selections will be sung in a variety of combinations by the ensembles of children that make up the youth portion of the Chorus of Westerly, from the youngest Training Choristers to the Junior Choristers up to the teenage Full Choristers. Each group has been working hard all season; rehearsing weekly and receiving individualized music education as part of a unique Children???s Music Program offered by the Chorus.??

The Children???s Music Program, under the direction of Andrew Howell and Dr. Audrey Cardany, offers a number of programs designed to enhance music education to our singing membership and the general public. One of the key programs is music fundamentals in which music theory, sight-singing, and rhythm are taught during weekly rehearsals to the Training, Junior and Full Choristers, ages 8 to 18. Young singers also learn Solfege, a method of singing and learning music that has been dramatically strengthening their ability to read and comprehend music at a rapid and useful pace.

As a multi-generational ensemble, the Chorus combines adults and children in all performances throughout the entire concert season. The Children???s Music Program creates a specialized curriculum to prepare the Chorus children for advanced choral music. The opportunity to have this artistic experience is beyond rare.

The April 8, 2016, performance celebrates the hard work, dedication and talent of the remarkable young singers of The Chorus of Westerly. This unique performance is designed to broaden the scope of music that the children of the Chorus get to present. It gives them the opportunity to study and perform high quality repertoire in smaller ensembles that push their independence and musicality in new directions.??
