Pawtucket Preservation Society Organizes Pictorial Exhibit on Pawtucket City Hall???s Historic Tower
??Pawtucket ??? As part of the City Hall Gallery Series, the Pawtucket Advisory Commission on Arts & Culture (PACAC) newest City Hall Art Gallery exhibit, by the Pawtucket Preservation Society, shines a spotlight on the historic City Hall Tower. The exhibit, on the first floor, runs until June 1, 2016 at Pawtucket City Hall, 137 Roosevelt Avenue.
?????The Pawtucket City Hall tower, a striking art deco architectural design dating back to the 1930???s, is one the most recognizable landmarks in the City,??? says Mayor Donald R. Grebien, ???I encourage residents and people visiting Pawtucket City Hall to see the photo spread of the tower and learn more about the tower???s place in Pawtucket???s history,??? he says.
??According to Miriam R. Plitt, PACAC???s Chair, there were calls to tear down the iconic City Hall tower because of the costs to fix ongoing structural problems. In correspondence to the Pawtucket City Council, Plitt???s Commission called for the study and evaluation as to repairing and retaining the landmark.????
?????The gallery exhibit makes it very clear that City hall is one of the most recognizable buildings on the Pawtucket skyline because of its distinctive art deco tower,??? says Plitt, noting that the structure visible from I 95 serves as a welcome beacon to 150,000 travelers who travel through our city daily. ???The City???s preservation society should be commended for creating this informational exhibit detailing the historical importance of this structure,??? she says.
??According to Jocelyn Dube-Toomey, who sits on the board of the Preservation Society of Pawtucket (PSP), notes that the City Hall Gallery will be the first of many to bring the nonprofit ???out of the shadows??? onto the street in the coming years. She says: ???We live in a culture where people want their products quick, cheap and replaceable. Preserving history is unfortunately costly, but it can save beautiful, rare pieces of architecture that cannot be replaced. Our display???s intent is to encourage citizens of Pawtucket to see City Hall from an interpretive standpoint. The tower???s architectural design has a message behind it that can empower and inspire them.???
The Advisory Commission on Arts and Culture (PACAC) is focused on the identification, expansion, and promotion of the arts, culture, and artistic features throughout the city of Pawtucket. PACAC brings rotating art gallery exhibits to Pawtucket City Hall throughout the year.
